Newlyweds: Disability Insurance
- The primary wage earning spouse should get coverage, while they still can
- Insure your non wage earning spouse to compensate for loss of their services
- It will usually cost 2% of gross income for men, and 4% for women
- If you can't afford the premiums, consider a critical illness policy
- Companies will only give you 60-67% of your gross income
- Disability riders on a life policy are not disability insurance, but simply pay your life insurance premium if you get injured, nothing else
- Make sure you get own occupation coverage, that pays if you can't perform your current job
- Accidental death & dismemberment insurance is not disability coverage
