Newlyweds: Health Insurance Planning
It can get complex when deciding to add and subtract family members. Employer plans are usually much cheaper for the employee than dependents.
Take into account:
- Health
- Frequency of doctors visits
- Expensive drugs
- If you are planning any children
- Dependent children from another marriage
- Your budget
Some members with recurent health issues, pending surgery or on expensive prescription drugs, may be stuck in their current health plan.
Some suggestions:
- Before "ordering a baby," enroll in a group plan or consider a dreaded HMO
- Group plans usually don't consider health, so take advantage of them for "sickies"
- Make sure your maximum exposure is low (out of pocket)
- Consider a PPO over an HMO
- If healthy, look at a plan with a higher co payment
- Avoid single disease insurance policies, they are not health insurance!
